Virtual reality and augmented reality drives the EADS Foundation's Research Takes Flight Day.
Because innovations in the field of virtual reality and augmented reality are at the heart of new applications, the EADS Corporate Foundation dedicated its Research takes flight Day to them.
The first round-table brought together :
The RHEA plateform which offers a virtual reality space for carrying out ergonomics studies on future aerospace vehicles and their manufacturing process and the I-space from PSA Group designed to create the illusion of total immersion in a virtual world were presented.
During the 2nd round-table, some public research applications were discussed with:
The research takes Flight day ended with a conference about "Virtual Reality and Human factors" by Florence REUZEAU, Head of Human Factors Department d'Airbus.
The EADS Foundation Prizewinners and Best Thesis Prizewinners were then awarded.
This gathering was also an opportunity to exchange with researchers supported by the Foundation and to discover their projects.

EADS pushes back the limits of complex mechanical systems and launches an international "Helicopter" professorship with The Ecole Centrale de Marseille, the Centre des Arts et Métiers d'Aix-en-Provence.
8 December 2011. The Ecole Centrale de Marseille, the Centre des Arts et Métiers d'Aix-en-Provence and the EADS Corporate Foundation join forces to create a chair dedicated to the study and dynamic control of complex mechanical systems, which will be inaugurated on 8 December at the Arts et Métiers School in Aix-en-Provence.
With a grant of 1.2 million euros for 4 years, the "Helicopter" chair is the result of the commitment of EADS Group, which puts research and innovation at the heart of its development strategy, and its Corporate Foundation's policy to support academic research.
The "Helicopter" chair will include a new course in mechatronics applied to aeronautics and to helicopters. Student engineers who take part will carry out their traineeship or their end-of-year project in one of Eurocopter's partner firms, in Munich or Valencia (Spain).
Jean Botti, Chief Operating Officer Technology and Innovation of EADS Group and Chairman of its Corporate Foundation, declared: "The search for better performances for these products leads us to push mechanical systems to the limits of their technological and structural possibilities. We cannot exceed this limit, but we must push it back through better understanding and better optimisation of these systems."
The Chairholder is Professor Pierre-Jean Barre. He is Director of the Centre des Arts et Métiers in Aix-en-Provence. He will be supported in his research by François Malburet, Lecturer, in charge of organisational activities and scientific activities, Bruno Cochelin, University Professor at the Ecole Centrale de Marseille, in charge of specific research actions in the field of non-linear dynamics and setting up specific courses, and Pierre Borne, University Professor at the Ecole Centrale de Lille, in charge of the chair's international profile.
The Chair's research will take place in the INOVSYS technological platform, founded one year ago. The purpose of this platform is to give new impetus to applied research by offering industrial players, lecturer-researchers and student engineers another way of working.

The decision to establish this chair was born of a simple observation: cyber attacks are becoming increasingly numerous, sophisticated and effective.
On 22 November 2011, the endowment fund “Le cercle des partenaires de l’IHEDN” (Circle of Partners of the French Institute of Higher National Defence Studies) and the EADS Corporate Foundation came together to set up the Castex chair of cyber strategy, named after Admiral Castex, the founder in 1936 of the College of Higher National Defence Studies, which later became IHEDN.
The research programme will help to raise awareness of the issues at stake, the current risks and threats, encourage more thought about the concepts of cyber space and cyber strategy, and draw up a map of cyber security requirements.
Studying the impact of cyber attacks on the resilience of sovereign states, their economies and their international relations will make it possible to enlighten political decision-makers and market players as to the best ways of facing this new strategic dimension. It will also help to lay the foundations for adapting international legislation and provide solutions for managing the conflicts involved in cyber space.
Funded to the tune of 570,000 euros for three years, the Castex chair of cyber strategy is the result of the EADS Group’s commitment to the cyber security issue and of its Corporate Foundation’s policy of sponsoring academic research. It is also an expression of IHEDN’s desire, through its endowment fund, to expand its strategic and analytical research activities in support of its mission to educate, sensitise and make an impact.
The incumbent of the new chair is Professor François Géré. He is the director and founder of IFAS, the French strategic analysis institute, an official representative for IHEDN, the French Institute of Higher National Defense Studies, and research director at Paris III University.
